Have you wondered what’s the best way to mentor someone? It’s a tricky question.
Effective mentoring is when you give the amount of push that inspires the mentee to stretch and do things they consider impossible. You must be wondering if there is a formula for this.
Psychologist David Scott Yeager and his colleagues produced a research paper that suggests the combination of two factors: high standards and assurance.
In their study, when students received wise criticism on their papers from the teachers that included high expectations and assurance, 80 percent of them revised their papers and made twice as many corrections in comparison to those who received generic feedback.
To take it forward and make this study work in the business ecosystem, Chip and Dan Heath suggest the following formula:
High Standards + Assurance
[Specifically telling your mentees that you have high expectations from them and you think they can accomplish it]
+Direction + Support
[Giving the right amount of direction and offering physical, psychological and environmental support]
= Enhanced self-insight
[The mentee would gain deeper insight and will be inspired to accomplish the stretch goals]
To let you know, this formula works equally well in parenting.
Change your game!
