We live in a fast-paced world where the constant pressure is to match the speed around us. In the corporate environment, those who lag behind are often seen as falling short in the race for success.
But when it comes to leadership, why doesn’t mere competence do the job?
In my decade-long journey as an executive coach, I’ve come across highly driven, competitive individuals, people who work relentlessly, striving to step into leadership roles. Yet, year after year, many of them find themselves waiting for recognition that never quite arrives.
So why doesn’t competence alone pay off? Let’s unpack this, and shed some light on what truly works when it comes to moving up the leadership ladder.
When competence isn’t enough
You’ve been delivering consistently. You know your work well. And yet, your superiors don’t see you as “ready” for a leadership role.
The answer often lies in one critical gap: your executive presence.
This is not a competence problem. It’s a perception gap. It isn’t discussed in performance reviews. It isn’t outlined in job descriptions. And yet, it is constantly being evaluated – in subtle but powerful ways.
It shows up in how you present your ideas in meetings. How you handle setbacks or disagreement. How you navigate complex situations. And how others feel when they interact with you.
What shapes executive presence
Composure. It’s never just that one high-stakes meeting that makes the difference, it’s the low-key ones that prepare you for it. The way you handle situations while maintaining the right composure sets the tone long before a critical moment arrives.
Clarity. You might be highly competent, but if you lack clarity of thought, and more importantly, how you communicate it, it quietly holds you back. People at the top don’t just want the right answer. They want to follow your thinking to get there.
Conviction. We all want people to listen and follow. But when it comes naturally that’s what truly defines leadership. Conviction that draws people in, rather than pushes them along.
Listening. Always being the one who says the final word rarely leaves a lasting impression. Knowing when to let others speak, and being genuinely willing to hear them, gives you a real edge as a decision-maker.
Intentionality. How you show up with your peers and teams speaks louder about your character than any deliverable ever will. Staying mindful of this consistently is what separates those who are simply respected from those who are truly followed.
Bridging the gap
Developing executive presence isn’t about a dramatic overhaul. It’s about noticing the small patterns that quietly work against you, reacting before pausing, over-explaining instead of simplifying, needing to be right in every room, not creating space for others to contribute.
Left unchecked, these patterns make your competence fade into the background. Awareness of them is what begins to shift your presence toward someone who is seen as genuinely ready for leadership.
While competence will always be an essential trait, it is executive presence that truly fuels the next chapter of your leadership journey.
If you’ve been feeling this gap in your own journey, chances are, you’re closer than you think. You just need the right shift.
This is just a starting point to help you recognise the gap. To bridge it further, a little guidance through an executive coach can go a long way. Click here to book a complimentary Breakthrough session.
